December Meeting of the Glace Bay Area Martha Associates

Our December meeting took place at the home of David and Paula Nearing in Reserve Mines. We were treated to a presentation from the Glace Bay Food Bank. Executive Director Sandra MacPherson, and Board Member Dave MacKeigan gave an informal talk about the history of the organization and how it has grown.

Born from a town that has been plagued with employment challenges from the closure of the coal mines and a reduction in the fishery, this group has been helping the people of Glace Bay and surrounding area for 30 years. Their demand has also increased and they are serving more and more people. Both Sandra and Dave had stressed that they do not do this alone as they rely heavily on donations and volunteers to make this happen. Continue reading

SYDNEY MARTHA ASSOCIATES MEETING, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10th, 2018

A wonderful meeting of the Sydney Martha Associates was held on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018 at the Bethel Presbyterian Church Hall. It was a cold night with lots of ice around. Eight of our Associates were able to attend.

We spent a little time on our check in as it was the first time in 2018 that we met. During our check in time, Sr. Dorothy Moore shared with us her experience of being present for the secularization ceremony for the Bethany Chapel. Bishop Dunn presided and only the Sisters of St. Martha were present. Sr. Dorothy said it was very beautiful and meaningful, but extremely emotional for the Sisters; sad, yet hopeful.
